I-12 EB overnight full closure scheduled for Saturday, 12/14/24

BATON ROUGE – All lanes of Interstate 12 eastbound will be closed overnight at the I-10/I-12 split on Saturday, Dec. 14, so crews can complete the I-10 concrete bridge deck for the College Flyover project, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced.

I-12 eastbound will be closed at the split from 10 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday. The detour route is I-10 eastbound to Essen Lane and Essen northbound to the I-12 eastbound on-ramp.

The left lane of I-10 eastbound from College Drive to the split and the left lane of I-12 eastbound from the split to Essen Lane will also be closed from 9 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday for the construction work. The closures are necessary to allow crews to pour a concrete deck for the new I-10 westbound bridge directly over I-12 eastbound.

Backup dates for the full closure, if needed, are Sunday, Dec. 15, and Monday, Dec. 16, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next day.

Once completed, the I-10 bridge will fly over I-12 eastbound and the re-aligned I-12 westbound lanes. The I-10 flyover bridge will also carry College Drive-bound traffic from I-10 westbound to a separated exit ramp, which also will carry I-12 westbound traffic exiting at College Drive.

DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds drivers to drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.

Temporary I-10 WB College Dr. exit configuration begins Saturday

Baton Rouge – Beginning Saturday, Oct. 5, the College Drive exit from I-10 westbound temporarily will return to one lane at the interstate exit point as progress continues on the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development’s College Flyover project.

The single-lane exit will have barriers along each shoulder to separate exit ramp traffic from I-10 westbound. As exit traffic approaches College Drive, the single lane will widen to three lanes, and the turn lane configuration will remain the same at the College Drive traffic signal.

The exit will be closed from 9 pm Friday until 8 am Saturday so crews can install striping and temporary barriers. The new configuration will begin Saturday morning and will remain in place for approximately eight weeks.

Meanwhile, crews on the west side of the project will continue construction on the permanent College Drive exit, permanent overhead signage, and the Ward Creek bridge widening. When the project is completed, College Drive-bound drivers will be able to exit I-10 and I-12 with a two-lane dedicated ramp that is separated from interstate traffic.

The College Flyover project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025. For more information on the project, visit www.collegeflyover.com.

DOTD reminds drivers to drive with caution through work zones and obey all speed limit signs.

Crews finish girder work Sunday, cancel Monday's I-12 East closure

Baton Rouge – The I-12 East closure scheduled for Monday night is canceled because crews finished the bridge girder work Sunday on the College Flyover project, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced.

DOTD closed all I-12 East lanes at the I-10/I-12 split four consecutive nights to accommodate bridge construction. Boh Bros, the project contractor, had to position personnel and equipment on I-12 East to safely lift five 110-foot steel girders adjacent to the I-10 West bridge that passes over I-12 East.

The work was scheduled to continue with a fifth overnight closure on Monday, but crews finished the job on Sunday night.

The additional bridge girders will be part of the overpass that eventually will carry all I-10 West traffic and a dedicated lane for vehicles exiting College Drive. I-12 West, which will be reconfigured to pass under the I-10 overpass, also will have a dedicated exit lane for College Drive traffic. The two exit lanes will form a new exit ramp that will be separated from interstate traffic.

DOTD expects to complete the project in early 2025, depending on weather and unforeseen conditions.

I-12 East to close at I-10 Thursday - Saturday nights

Baton Rouge – Interstate 12 East will be closed overnight at the I-10/I-12 split on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights so crews can install bridge girders for the College Flyover project, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced.

The closures will begin at 10 p.m. each night and end at 5 a.m. the next day.

The detour for I-12 East traffic is I-10 East to the Essen Lane exit and north on Essen to the I-12 East on-ramp (see map below).

The closure is necessary so workers can install additional bridge girders on the new I-10 West bridge that passes directly above I-12 East traffic.

After the bridge construction is complete, crews will begin reconfiguring I-12 West so it also will pass under the bridge.

The project will have dedicated College Drive exit lanes from I-10 West and I-12 West. The exit lanes will merge to form a ramp separated from interstate traffic.

The project should be finished in early 2025, depending on weather and unforeseen conditions. For the latest information on the project, go to www.collegeflyover.com.

DOTD reminds you to drive cautiously through the work zone and to watch for work crews and their equipment.

One lane of I-12 westbound will be closed throughout weekend

BATON ROUGE - The left lane of westbound Interstate 12 from Essen Lane to the I-10/I-12 merge will be closed this weekend, from 9 pm Friday, July 26, until 5 am Monday, July 29, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced.

The weekend closure will allow College Flyover project crews to install new sign foundations between the westbound and future realigned eastbound lanes of I-12. To accommodate this work, the left shoulder of eastbound I-12 also will be closed during the weekend from the I-10/I-12 split to Essen Lane.

No detours will be necessary. Westbound I-12 will have two lanes of traffic open, and eastbound I-12 will have three lanes open during the closure.

The College Flyover project will create a new westbound exit ramp for College Drive that will be easily accessible to I-10 and I-12 westbound traffic. Under the current configuration of the I-10/I-12 merge, I-10 westbound drivers must change lanes several times in less than one mile to exit at College Drive.

The project is expected to be completed in early 2025, depending upon weather and unforeseen conditions. For the latest information on the project, go to www.collegeflyover.com.

All I-12 East lanes at I-10/I-12 split to close overnight on Friday

BATON ROUGE – All lanes of Interstate 12 East at the I-10/I-12 split will be closed overnight Friday at 10 p.m., for construction activities, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said.

The closure begins at 10 p.m., Friday, June 7, and ends at 5 a.m., Saturday, June 8.

All I-12 East traffic at the split will detour to I-10 East, to the Essen Lane exit, north on Essen, to the I-12 East on-ramp.

A new I-10 West overpass, which is part of the College Flyover project, opened to traffic in April and passes directly over I-12 East near the  I-10/I-12 split. Crew members must remove formwork from construction of the overpass, and they need to move equipment onto I-12 East to safely remove the material.

When the project is completed, the overpass will flyover I-12 East and a realigned I-12 West. Under the new configuration, I-12 West traffic will form the inside lanes of I-10 West at the merge. One lane of I-12 West will peel off before the merge to exit at College Drive.

The project is expected to be completed in early 2025, depending upon weather and unforeseen conditions. For the latest information on the project, go to www.collegeflyover.com.

I-12 East overnight closure set for Monday, May 20

BATON ROUGE - All lanes of I-12 East between the I-10/I-12 split and Essen Lane will be closed overnight on Monday, May 20, so crews can remove an old overpass that is directly above the interstate, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced.

The closure will begin at 10 p.m., Monday, May 20, and will end at 5 a.m., Tuesday, May 21. In case of inclement weather, the full closure and removal operations will be pushed to the next night.

The detour is to take I-10 East to the Essen Lane exit and Essen Lane north to the I-12 East onramp.

The old overpass was part of I-10 West that must be removed so crews can widen a new, adjacent overpass that already is in service. The work is part of the College Flyover project.

The concrete and metal in the old overpass will be recycled.

When the project is completed, the overpass will flyover I-12 eastbound and a realigned I-12 westbound. Under the new configuration, I-12 westbound traffic will form the inside lanes of I-10 westbound at the merge. One lane of I-12 westbound will peel off before the merge to exit at College Drive.

The project is expected to be completed in early 2025. For the latest information on the project, go to www.collegeflyover.com.

College Flyover crews will reschedule old I-10 West overpass removal

BATON ROUGE - Crews working overnight last Friday were unable to remove the old Interstate 10 westbound overpass near the I-10/I-12 split and will try again later, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said.

During removal operations on the College Flyover project, the team encountered unexpected equipment issues and was forced to abandon the effort at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday. As the design-build team works toward rescheduling the removal operations, work continues on other areas of the project.

All lanes of I-12 eastbound had been closed overnight because it is directly beneath the old structure that was scheduled for removal.

All I-10 westbound traffic just before the I-10/I-12 merge was shifted last month from the old overpass to a new, adjacent overpass. When the old overpass is removed, crews will widen the new overpass to accommodate a separate I-10 westbound lane for a new College Drive exit ramp.

The concrete and metal in the old overpass will be recycled.

When the project is completed, the overpass will fly over I-12 eastbound and a realigned I-12 westbound. Under the new configuration, I-12 westbound traffic will form the inside lanes of I-10 westbound at the merge. One lane of I-12 westbound will peel off before the merge to exit at College Drive.

I-12 East at split will be closed overnight on Friday

Baton Rouge - All I-12 eastbound traffic at the I-10/I-12 split will be detoured overnight on Friday, May 10, while crews on the College Flyover project remove an old overpass, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced.

The closure and detour begin at 10 p.m. Friday, May 10, and will end at 5 a.m. Saturday, May 11. The detour for all I-12 eastbound traffic at the split will be I-10 eastbound to the Essen Lane exit, and north on Essen to the I-12 eastbound entrance ramp.

If the closure is canceled because of weather or other circumstances, the backup closure is 10 p.m. Saturday, May 11, to 5 a.m. Sunday, May 12.

All I-10 westbound traffic just before the I-10/I-12 merge was shifted last month from the old overpass to a new, adjacent overpass. Friday night’s closure is necessary to allow crews to take down the old overpass.

After the overpass is removed, crews will widen the new overpass to accommodate a separate I-10 westbound lane for a new College Drive exit ramp. When the project is completed, the overpass will fly over I-12 eastbound and a realigned I-12 westbound.

Under the new configuration, I-12 westbound traffic will form the inside lanes of I-10 at the merge. One lane of I-12 westbound will peel off before the merge to exit at College Drive.

I-10 westbound traffic near I-12 to move to new overpass on Wednesday

Baton Rouge - Baton Rouge traffic on Interstate 10 westbound near Interstate 12 will shift to a new overpass on Wednesday, April 24, as crews continue to make progress on the Department of Transportation and Development’s College Flyover project.

The slight shift to the right will happen at 5 a.m. Wednesday and will begin just west of the I-12 eastbound exit from I-10 westbound. Construction crews will complete all barrier placements and temporary road markings during an April 23 overnight right-lane closure on I-10 westbound from Essen Lane to College Drive. That lane closure begins at 9 p.m. Tuesday and ends at 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The new overpass is adjacent to the existing overpass that crosses over I-12 eastbound near the I-10 and I-12 merge. After I-10 westbound traffic is moved to the new structure, crews can begin preparing the existing overpass for demolition. Then, the new overpass will be widened to accommodate a separate exit lane for College Drive.

That demolition work is tentatively scheduled for mid-May and will require an overnight closure of I-12 eastbound.

When the project is finished, I-12 westbound will be reconfigured to pass beneath the new overpass, adjacent to I-12 eastbound traffic. A separate College Drive exit lane for I-12 westbound will merge with the I-10 westbound College Drive exit lane to form a new exit ramp that will be separated from I-10 traffic.

A full closure of Interstate 12 eastbound at the I-10/I-12 split has been rescheduled for 10 pm Friday, March 22, through Saturday, March 23.

The interstate closure is necessary so crews can install a concrete deck on a new I-10 overpass, which is directly above I-12 eastbound traffic.

The detour route for the March 22 closure remains the same: All I-12 eastbound traffic will detour along I-10 eastbound to the Essen Lane exit and move north on Essen to the I-12 eastbound onramp.

The full closure was scheduled for Friday, March 15, but was postponed because of rain.

The new I-10 overpass is part of DOTD’s College Flyover project, which will create a dedicated exit ramp at College Drive for all I-10 and I-12 westbound traffic. The new ramp will make travel in the area safer and more efficient.

Once completed, the overpass will be part of I-10 westbound that will fly over I-12 eastbound and the re-aligned I-12 westbound lanes. The overpass also will carry College Drive-bound traffic from I-10 westbound to a separated ramp, which also will carry exit traffic from I-12 westbound.

·      Monday, June 26 - the left lane of Interstate 12 westbound will be closed from Essen Lane to the I-10/I-12 merge from 9 pm Monday, 6/26/23, until 5 am Tuesday, 6/27/23. This closure is necessary to accommodate new concrete placement.

·      Thursday, June 29 - the left lane of Interstate 12 westbound will be closed from Essen Lane to the I-10/I-12 merge from 9 pm Thursday, 6/29/23, until 5 am Friday, 6/30/23. This closure is necessary to accommodate new concrete placement.

All closures are subject to rescheduling due to weather conditions.

The College Flyover project will make it safer and easier to access College Drive from westbound Interstates 10 and 12 by creating a new exit ramp that easily can be accessed by all I-10 and I-12 westbound traffic. Under the current alignment, some I-10 westbound traffic must change lanes up to three times in a one-mile space to access the College Drive exit.

The $52.3 million design-build project will change how all westbound traffic approaches the merger by reconfiguring the I-12 westbound lanes to be closer to the I-12 eastbound lanes. The project also will include a new I-10 westbound bridge that will flyover both directions of I-12, leaving room for the new College Drive exit ramp.

College Drive exit ramp changes in place for Saturday

BATON ROUGE - Beginning Saturday morning, drivers will notice temporary changes to how they access Corporate Drive from the Interstate 10 westbound College Drive exit, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced.

The right lane at the end of the exit ramp that bypasses the traffic signal and turns directly to Corporate Drive will be closed for the next few months. This will allow crews on the College Flyover project to rebuild and improve the interchange.

To help alleviate congestion at the traffic signal, crews will open a third, right lane on Saturday where the ramp ends at College Drive. Drivers can use this right-turn-only lane to access Corporate Drive or northbound College Drive.

Also on Saturday, crews will open a second lane farther east on the I-10 exit ramp to help traffic flow.

The temporary configuration should be in place until this fall, when crews will finish a new interchange with a separated slip lane straight to Corporate Drive.

When the entire College Flyover project is completed, all I-10 and I-12 westbound traffic will access College Drive via a new exit ramp that will be easily accessible and separated from interstate traffic. Interstate 12 westbound will be realigned adjacent to I-12 eastbound and will pass under a rebuilt I-10 westbound overpass.

You can see an animated video of the new configuration here.

The project is expected to be completed in early 2025. For the latest information on the project, go to www.collegeflyover.com.

DOTD reminds you to drive with caution through the work zone and to be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.
